After extensive negotiations, the BBC and ITV have reached a late agreement with Fifa to broadcast all 64 matches of this summer's Women's World Cup on free-to-air terrestrial TV in the UK. Although the specific channels for each fixture are yet to be confirmed, both broadcasters will cover the final match.
There were concerns about securing the rights deal for European countries, even with several weeks remaining until the start of the tournament. Sky Sports reported that Fifa President Gianni Infantino had threatened not to broadcast the event in five European countries due to a financial dispute. However, the situation has been resolved, and TV contracts are now in place for the UK, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy.
Among the 32 competing nations in the Women's World Cup, England, the current European champions, are considered strong contenders. Managed by Sarina Wiegman, the Lionesses have been drawn into Group D alongside Haiti, Denmark, and China. Unfortunately, they have been dealing with injuries to key players, with Captain Leah Williamson, midfielder Fran Kirby, and Euro 2022 top scorer Beth Mead all ruled out of the squad.
The United States, the defending champions who emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the 2019 final, will once again face the Dutch in Group E, along with Vietnam and Portugal. Australia's team, known as the "Matildas," boasting superstar captain Sam Kerr, will compete in Group B alongside the Republic of Ireland, Nigeria, and Canada.
